Holy Land Experience

Florida has some pretty weird tourist attractions, to be sure.  Parks with live gator shows, talking mice and mermaids too, but the Holy Land Experience is something special.  Sitting across I-4 from the Orlando Ikea, this (tax-exempt) biblical theme park is run by televangelist Jan Crouch and the Trinity Broadcasting Network.

Let me save you $50 and give you a quick photo tour.

FFVA Videos

For the past three years my video partner, Dan Dennis, and I have been shooting video and photos for the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association (FFVA).  Our work is used to encourage new membership and to let people know what's going on in the industry.  It's been a great experience and we get to travel all over Florida and see how our food is grown.  This last trip took us to shoot farmers of potatoes, oranges, blueberries and sod.  Here are a couple of the finished videos and stills.

Steve Williams shoots Mermaid

I recently photographed Mermaid Melissa  (http://www.mermaidmelissa.com) underwater at Crystal River and Silver Springs, FL.  Melissa is as real as Mermaids get, and this is her full-time business. She is incredibly graceful underwater and can hold her breath for over four minutes.
At Crystal River we were hoping to get a Manatee encounter with Melissa, but the one mom and calf there just kept rubbing against a pole and then me!

She posed for photos with kids before our shoot...they love her!

Machine Gun America Orlando

This was another crazy shoot for London-based Barcroft Media, the first being the bikini car wash video that now has over 380,000 views on YouTube:  http://stevewilliamsphoto.blogspot.com/2014/11/baywash-bikini-car-wash.html

Machine Gun America in Orlando is another one of those stories that the Brits shake their heads at and say, "Only in America!".  You just have to watch the video to see what I'm talking about.  The viewer comments at the bottom show the wide range of opinion on this controversial topic.

This was a real quick run-and-gun shoot with just Mike and I trying to take photos at the same time, while essentially making a mini-commercial in just a few hours, interviews and all.

It was incredibly loud in the firing range.

College Video

This video was produced to show the achievements of the past president and growth of the school.  Four interview subjects were chosen and I scouted locations for the shoot.  I shot all of the motion segments, but the photos were stock.

Book cover shoot in New York

This is a strange story on a couple of levels.  First, I was asked to photograph a doctor and one of his patients in New York City for a book cover. You'd think there might be a photographer in NY who could do this, but they had a reference from a designer I've worked with many times here in Orlando, and they really wanted me to shoot it. OK, fine.
The second odd thing is that this doctor specializes in Gynecomastia, which is male breast reduction. I'm not making this up.  He's done thousands of them, is considered the best in the world and has written a book about it that needs photos.  OK, fine.
So, I get a layout from Candace Crowe Design, who primarily works with cosmetic surgeons on their marketing, and we arrange a time to shoot in New York that works for everyone.
I have a friend that's a photographer in Brooklyn who hooks me up with lighting equipment and an assistant and we're ready to go.
I was concerned about getting the gear to two locations in the same day, but the assistant hired a delivery car and I just had to meet him at the gym for the model shoot with my camera.  This was easier than working at home!
Our cover model, and former patient, is a busy personal trainer with a very tight schedule, but I was well prepared and did his body shot quickly.  Then we were off to meet the doctor in mid-town for his portrait session.  Dr. Blau is a very nice man, and he was patient and cooperative in coming up with a nice photo.  After that the assistant took the equipment back, and I met my wife and some friends for a tour of Radio City Music Hall a few blocks away.  All in a days work.

Here's the final book cover

Here we are in the Brooklyn Gym.  That's me on the right, in case you weren't sure.

This is the original comp I was given

Steve Williams shoots Parade Magazine cover

I was selected to shoot the 2015 Parade Magazine "All-America Player of the Year" cover story about high school quarterback Kyler Murray.  Parade is the most widely read magazine in America, with a circulation of 32 million.
The shoot was at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, and we accomplished a number of different shots in a short amount of time.  Kyler is a fine young man, and with has signed to play for Texas A&M next year.
The full story can be found here:

That's me in position for the "hero" shot, and Mike checking the iPad as the photos were taken.
